The 2015 Toyota Supra vs Nissan Skyline is a very old showdown in which the two companies traded blows as for who had the best sports car of the era. Toyota was clearly dominant back in 2000 when with the MK3 Supra it managed to get one of the biggest fan bases in the World. However, since then things have changed considerably because the Supra ceased production, leaving the Skyline with the GT-R name the only real sports car of the Japanese car industry.
Let’s start our comparison with the Supra because it is the long awaited successor of the original Supra. The car is scheduled to be released in 2015 or by the start of 2016 when it will come on the market at a base price of around $70,000 to $90,000 which is right in the GT-R territory or even lower than that. It is expected to use the same platform as the new BMW Z4 which would mean it will be an all aluminum car.
The engine in it is most likely going to be the 2 liter BMW inline 4 which was presented as the engine to equip the next BMW Z4M models. In its standard form, it will develop up to 350 horsepower which is actually quite impressing coming from such a small engine. On top of that, the Supra will also feature a pair of electric motors which will up the power to around 420 to 460 horsepower and up to 440 lb-ft of torque which put it dangerously close to the GT-R. However, unlike the Nissan, Toyota is taking a different approach to the sports car market trying to offer the sports car of tomorrow rather than the one of today. This means that even though it isn’t the fastest or the most powerful, it is certainly one of the more fuel efficient cars on the market as well as one of the better looking.
The 2015 Toyota Supra is expected to get from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 3.7 seconds thanks to those electric motors which offer a tremendous amount of torque at very low rpm. The expected top speed is likely to be around 180 miles per hour or even less than that, considering the two electric motors will be disabled at speeds of over 140 miles per hour.
The Nissan Skyline GT-R on the other hand is a completely different car. It is much larger than the Supra as well as much heavier but thanks to a very complex four wheel drive system and a ton of computers, it is one of the best driving cars in the World. It is powered by Nissan’s own 3.8 liter twin-turbocharged V6 which isn’t nearly as fuel efficient as the BMW engine in the Supra but it is a lot more powerful. It should develop around 600 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque which would allow it to get from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 3 seconds and up to a maximum top speed of around 200 miles per hour, making it the first production car from Nissan to reach that speed out of the factory.
Just like the Supra, the Nissan Skyline will be using a very similar transaxle gearbox which will be mounted on the rear axle for better weight distribution. This is a dual-clutch 6 speed automatic for the Nissan and 8 speed automatic for the Supra.
The winner here is probably the Supra because it is the car that tries to demonstrate that hybrid cars are just as fun as petrol powered ones. It manages to do it in a very good looking body with inspirations taken from the legendary LFA as well as from the mark 3 Supra which was and still is one of the most appreciated sports cars.
