The 2015 Toyota Supra vs Lamborghini Gallardo showdown is a very interesting match considering these two are very different cars even though both of them are plenty powerful and fast. While the Supra hasn’t been officially launched, the Gallardo has already been phased out in the favor of the Huracan which is just an improved version of it with a very similar engine but with a higher price tag and a design inspired by that of the Aventador.
While the original Toyota Supra was a pure breed sports car with a moderately powerful engine and an affordable price considering the performance, the next generation car is going to be a lot more than that. The 2015 model is actually going to be a car developed together with BMW which would mean that it should use far more advanced technology than its predecessor.
The Gallardo on the other hand has been the baby of Audi since the beginning and it was constantly developed in one of the most appreciated super-cars in the World.
Let’s start this showdown by comparing the engines of these two cars. While the Gallardo has the bigger engine, the generated power should be around the same considering the difference in technology.
Performance and Price
The Gallardo uses a 5 or 5.2 liter V10 engine with power ranging from 500 to 600 horsepower which is quite impressive for a car that cost no more than $150,000 when it was launched. This engine allowed it to get from 0 to 60 miles per hour in around 4 seconds and go up to a maximum top speed of nearly 190 miles per hour. Sure, these are impressive numbers, but this speed comes with a cost. The car was notorious for the poor fuel consumption which was as low as 14 to 16 miles to the gallon.
The Supra on the other hand is a completely different beast. It has been confirmed that it will use a 2 liter turbocharged BMW engine which will make by itself 350 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. This will be mated to a pair of electric motors that will up the power to as much as 420 to 460 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque which even though is lower than the Gallardo, it should easily outrun it thanks to the massive amount of torque available at low RPM thanks to the electric motors.
Its fuel consumption will also be better and thanks to the hybrid drivetrain it should hover around 30 miles to the gallon on average. As far as the performance goes, the Supra will be able to get to 60 miles per hour in less than 3.6 seconds and up to a maximum top speed of 180 miles per hour which even though is no higher than that of the Gallardo, the sensation of speed should be increased thanks to the electric motors.
The design of the two cars is also very different. While the Gallardo is using a mid-mounted engine and a super-car like appearance, the Supra will be more conventional with a front mounted engine and a LFA inspired design. Both cars are using active aerodynamics but the Supra tends to be the better looking car with angular design and a very aggressive general look.
It isn’t very easy to determinate the winner between the 2015 Toyota Supra vs Lamborghini Gallardo considering both of them are great cars which shaped and are going to shape the future of the automobile. However, we can clearly state that the Supra, even though it is slightly lower than the Gallardo and it might not be as liked by the people, it is the better of the two just because it shows us where the current car industry is going.
